I am an architect trained in the United States and KTH in Sweden. I began my PhD studies in september of 2009 and aim to finish in 2014. My research focus in broad terms is on how architecture and spatial configuration affects social interaction and appropriation of urban territories. I am interested in how an urban structure and it’s material expressions frame and delimit space and what effect this has on use and stewardship at the interface between public and private. My name is Sepideh Karami. I am an architect and researcher currently carrying out my PhD research at Umeå School of Architecture. I graduated from Iran University of Science and Technology with an M.A. in Architecture in 2001. Since graduation I have been committed to teaching, research and practice. In 2010 I achieved my second master in “Design for Sustainable Development” at Chalmers University in Sweden and in mid 2010 I started to work as a guest researcher at Umeå School of Architecture.

My PhD research –In Search of Utopia in the Silent Rebellion– studies the relation between Formal and Informal worlds and Revolutionary Aesthetics. It investigates what forms of emancipation emerge in the encounter of formal and informal world and how practices of architecture enhance and mobilize these emancipating potentials through different forms of encounter, exchange and dialogue between social classes, to suggest a social and human alternative to the fragmented and segregated cities we are living in.

If I’m not an elderly Roman Catholic nun or a precocious 10 year-old girl, or even the ghost of William Shakespeare himself…

THEN I am an architect who tells stories. I am a teacher who learns from her students. I am also a researcher at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, KTH, Stockholm, within Critical Studies, working on a dissertation exploring the architecture of desire and pedagogy through critical fictions.
